Self-Regulatory Organisation (SRO)

Self-Regulatory Organisation membership — the Swiss model is the reference — delivers AML supervision through an authorised private body instead of a direct licence: SO-FIT and its peers supervise financial intermediaries below the full-licence threshold. Entry runs two to six months and turns on the SRO’s own fit-and-proper review. Catalogue inventory has carried SRO-supervised VASP entities and full-service Swiss establishment support. At a change of ownership the membership is re-examined — the buyer must satisfy the SRO as the seller once did, which makes the buyer’s own file part of the deal timeline.

SRO routes depend on membership standing, Swiss substance and AML fit.

A self-regulatory organisation route is usually relevant for Swiss financial intermediary or VASP-adjacent activity where AML supervision and local substance have to be credible. SKY7 checks membership standing before a buyer relies on the file.

The handover note should cover Swiss management, compliance officer setup, AML policies, client onboarding, transaction monitoring, bank relationships and whether the planned services require FINMA-level permissions instead.

SRO buyer questions

Route checks before a buyer compares live files.

What does an SRO route actually provide?

It can provide AML supervisory membership for eligible Swiss intermediary activity, but it does not replace every FINMA licence.

What is checked before transfer?

Check membership status, AML officer coverage, policies, directors, local substance, client type, bankability and any pending supervisory questions.

When should a buyer consider FINMA instead?

FINMA may be needed when the activity goes beyond SRO-supervised intermediary work, such as certain fintech, securities or banking-like models.
